Catherine Marie Boyer
AA bay area native, Cathy was drawing and painting in childhood and began formal instruction in oil
painting at age thirteen. After college, she was employed in graphic design, while keeping up with
drawing and painting on her own time. Thankfully, the timing of the dot.com bust in 2001 presented
a window of opportunity to study further.
AIt was exposure to the Henche method during this time that changed her approach to color. This
method, also referred to as a ‘colorist school’ emerged out of the Cape Cod School in Providence,
Massachusetts started by William Merritt Chase and continued by Charles Hawthorne and later
Henry Henche. Like the California Impressionists of the 1900’s, Cathy seeks to capture the beauty,
mood and nuance of the California landscape from land to sea.
A“Capturing the changeable light conditions that transform a view from ordinary one moment
to extraordinary the next is what intriques me. I seek to capture these rarer moments in time
and share them.”
About process:
A“Nature presents the raw material, I am drawn to the scene for what it presents visually.
A particular contrast; in color, value or shapeor a grey day that has closer values, with
more intense color and atmosphere. A colornote, put down in the beginning, may remain
an important anchor, key in relating temperature and value throughout.
AI strive to keep the work vital, knowing when to stop is key.”
